FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES
SCHOLARSHIPS

Mount Angel. The Mount Angel Community Foundation has selected five students from this year’s John F. Kennedy High School graduating class for foundation scholarships. Each scholar will receive $2,000.00 per year for up to four years of undergraduate studies.
Daniel Vandecoevering is the Ivo and Thrasilla Bauman Scholar. He is actively involved in the life of his community, church and school. He has volunteered washing wheel chairs at the nursing center and supported Oktoberfest. He is an altar server, greeter, lector, usher and an instrumentalist in the parish choir at St. Mary Church. He has been a part of nearly every extra curricular club at JFK and he has made a real difference.
Daniel will attend Oregon State University where he will study Turf Grass Management. He hopes eventually to manage golf courses, for that will involve three aspects of life that he truly enjoys – the sport of golf, the scientific application of agronomic practices, and the knowledge that he will make golf courses nicer, more playable and more challenging.

Kurt Berning, a distinguished scholar and communicator is the Mt. Angel Telecommunications Scholar. He has a 4.0 GPA, serves as student body president, and participates in band, sports, FBLA, and a score of other activities. He serves his church and his community volunteering with Oktoberfest, the nursing center and Habitat for Humanity. His cross country coach, Steve Ritchie describes him as a team leader who is “a gifted writer and speaker.”

Kurt plans on attending the University of Portland. His life goals are “to get married and have a loving family, graduate from college with a master’s degree and work to find success in my career, travel and experience the world … pursue my interest in politics, eventually becoming a United States Senator and making the world a better place.” Senator Berning does have a nice ring about it.

Rosemary Bochsler is the Katie Westbrook Memorial Scholar. She is an excellent student who has taken the tough, advanced courses in preparation for college. She is a three sport athlete and an outstanding community volunteer. She has been a member of Habitat since her freshman year, worked the school’s doughboy booth at Oktoberfest and numerous other projects.

Rosie plans on attending Western Oregon University where she hopes to earn a double degree in health/fitness and education. She wants to be a physical education/health teacher in a small community like Mount Angel.

Hillary Boost is the first recipient of the Bob Fessler Family Scholarship. She has been an Oktoberfest volunteer since joining the Bavarian Dance Team in middle school and has performed with the Marion County Citizens Band. She has been involved in sports, church, and teaching others at Cannyonville Camp.

Hillary has been accepted to the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. Her future plans include becoming a middle school teacher.
Hillary was recently recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Mount Angel’s Junior First Citizen of the Year.

Wendy Lopez, the Mount Angel Community Scholar has benefited Mount Angel as an Oktoberfest volunteer, through her work with the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center and the Habitat for Humanity program. In 2006, she went to Mexico as a volunteer to help repaint a village church.

Wendy will attend Western Oregon University and major in elementary education. She would like to work as fifth grade teacher here in Mount Angel.

Since its inception 1997, the Scholarship Endowment has provided support to 44 JFK graduates. The endowment is funded by donations from the Mount Angel business community, concerned citizens, friends and Oktoberfest.
