In 1966, a group of civic leaders, taking note of Mt. Angel's Swiss-Bavarian heritage, founded Oktoberfest. It was an immediate hit, with visitors coming from Oregon and neighboring states.

Gallon House Covered Bridge
1.5 miles NW of Silverton
This bridge was built in 1917 and spans the Abiqua creek. Recently restored, this is Oregon's oldest covered bridge. It got its name during Prohibition, when liquor was sold by the gallon in a nearby house.

1 Abbey Drive, St Benedict
Built in 1833 by Swiss Benedictine monks on a 300-foot bluff, this building includes a retreat house and two museums.
